The Worst Things to Buy on Black Friday

Black Friday is listed as one of the best times to get great deals. While you may be able to get incredible deals on a wide range of products during Black Friday, there are some items you should avoid buying. This is because certain items are actually much cheaper to get, if you wait for another month or two.

In this post we take a look at some of the worst Black Friday deals, as well as some suggestions on when you should be on the lookout for better deals:

1. Winter coats

From a historical perspective, there are always deals to be found on clothing items. In fact, some of the best clothing sales occur on Black Friday. However, winter based clothing apparel is regarded as being a ‘not-as-great buy’ on black Friday. Certain winter items such as sweaters, hats, scarves and winter coats, will not be discounted as much. In fact, most manufacturers will not offer the best deals on winter coats until the end of the winter season. Therefore, if you choose to wait until January or March, you will get a much better deal. For instance, you may be able to get a winter coat for 20% off on Black Friday. However, as the winter season ends, a manufacturer may offer that same jacket for 40% off. Therefore, wait until January until you buy a winter coat.

2. Fitness equipment

November comes with various deals on fitness equipment. But, chances are you won’t be able to find anything for more than 15% off. In all actuality when it comes to fitness equipment, statistics indicate that December has been historically known as being the best time to get the greatest deals.

3. Jewelry

Statistics show that a vast amount of people purchase their engagement rings and other types of jewelry on Black Friday. However, the reality is that you would be much better off if you wait for a bit longer. According to research that was conducted by the International Diamond Exchange, 33% of all diamonds that are sold for the year, occur during the months of November and December. Because jewelry stores expect an influx of customers during November and December, there really is no incentive to try and attract customers with meaningful deals. Because statistically, this is the period when people buy the most jewelry. However, statistics gathered by PriceScoop demonstrated that the price of a 4 carat diamond ring in November, will be 25% lower in the month of March. Therefore, by waiting to purchase your jewelry for another 3 months, you can save up to 25% off.

4. Toys

Many parents purchase their children’s Christmas gifts – in the form of toys – on Black Friday because they think this is the best time to get Christmas toys. Contrary to popular belief, this isn’t really the case. While you may be able to get good deals on Black Friday, statistics show that retailers will mark those same exact toys down, approximately 1-2 weeks before Christmas. In addition to that, many retailers host clearance events to make room for new toys, during the months of January and February. Therefore, even if you want to get a toy for your child for Christmas, it would be better for you to wait until the last 2 weeks leading up to Christmas day.
